Cat Fight Special Edition – Breakfast in America. AmCup special.

This week was our first edition of the Cat Fight in the North Sea. Breakfast in America, AmCup special !

Our kitties were impatient to start. 8 boats were waiting to test this new America Cup course. The usual participants, but as well new comers ! We welcome them and hope to see them for more races !

The course was expected to be fast, tactical and as well aggressive. It was. As we were expecting, mark #2 and #3 were very hot with boats coming from both sides of the mark. Globally our kitties were behaving and our RD was managing the situation. 3 penalties has been given and 2 DSQ in a total of 3 races.

We saw as well different routes and trajectories which is normal for a course letting a lot of freedom to skippers.
The condition were as well excellent. Only one participant suffered crashes in the 3 races. The Cat Fight’s team is suggesting an exorcism of the FS !

RACE ONE

This was the first run. Easy start for most of our competitors with no specific problem at the line. Claire and Kayo had a bad start, passing the line after all others competitors. Moon, Phil and Dae were ahead of the pack rushing the first mark full speed. Showing her incredible skill with the FS, Claire managed to do a great come back finishing the race is second position, first position after handicap. Congratulation.

After her DSQ Looralie was waiting her opportunity. She took it. She was unbeatable on this course letting all others participants way behind her. Cat Fight June 23

For this third edition of the Cat Fight, the Gods of SL were against us.

6 sailors showed up for the race. The usual crowd and one new comer, Alex, the king of the IF.

We had as well a bunch of people on the dock and our usual RD, Beane, assisted by Serena.

We were all expecting a great race. The course was difficult and fast, perfect for our little kitties.

The race turned to be a complete disaster.

Only two sailors survived the first race and we decided to cancel it and do a new one.

Not much better. Some of us, like me and Laured were not able to raise our sheet, stuck on the starting line….after 3 min fight the sheet finally raised up and we started we 30 sec delay. I can’t tell what did happen on the race, since we were way behind, but some other sailors didn’t even have our luck to finish the loop or crossed the starting line. Congratulation for all our sailors who tried to sail against the lag.

Because of the time and the poor condition, we canceled the reverse loop and let the place to Gemma and her race hoping them better condition that we had.

Sorry for these poor conditions kitties and I really hope it will be better next week.

It was a sad night. We decided to get back home and cure our wounds with some good homemade moonshine.

After two hours drinking in the camp, I realized that this was more than just a race…it is the big family of the hotlapers. Friends and Family.

Cat Fight – June 16

Hello Kitties !

Second edition of the Cat Fight The place was a little kinky this Friday; our starting line was located the BDSM Palace Jetty ! Promising !

Conditions were good and 4 kitties were waiting for speed 🙂

The loop was a little tricky with a first leg up wind. Looralie took the lead and didn’t let any chance to anyone. She raced far ahead letting our photographer behind !

For the second race we had 5 boats at the starting line. The start was very fast, a 19 knots run to the first waypoint. Laured managed to keel over at the starting line creating some confusion among the kitties. This was of course a calculated strategy to give me a chance to take some advance ! ^^

Looralie took again the lead of the race finishing with a very good time on this reverse lap. She was the queen of the night.

Congratulation as well to our two FS single handed (Sunny and Laured). This was a very difficult race for single handed FS and they made it both to the finish line !

Welcome as well to Iteke for her first participation to the cat Fight. She did a very good time in both race. A dangerous kitty ! Watch out.

Cat Fight

Ahoy Hotlapers and Speed junkies. Thank you very much for participating to the first edition of the « Cat Fight ». We had 7 catamarans on the starting line between Nacra and FS. All well known speed junkies: Phil, Claire (Atomic), Looralie, Ayra, Serinea, Lolla, Laured and Kayo. Sunny joined the group for the second race.

15 min before the start the atmosphere was wild: sails were flapping in the northern wind.

This first edition of the race was challenging. This week lap was tricky. A very small area before the starting line, a small starting line and a few sim corners to avoid….

Our RD was about to have work ! I was still confident that August will maintain order among all these wild kitties. He did !

The first race start was … a mess…..7 catamarans rushing the line at 16 knots. I don’t know who we did it…..i probably closed my eyes at one point 🙂

Phil took the first place with no possible discussion. He was the king of the race maintaining his first position.

I am very glad that we all made it without crashes. The gods of SL were on our side for this first edition. (i believe Lola crashed after the line)

A week on the Hotlap

It was so exciting  to have the hotlap at home.

It is like having the family for Thanksgiving; you never know what is going to happen!

Well a lot of things happened. That’s for sure!

Fruit Islands residents saw a lot of boats: 277 runs in a week time! That’s amazing.

The best time is for August West with an AC-62: 04:07 min !

46 runs for the Nacra and Looralie took the lead of the gang with an amazing time: 06:49!

Look these numbers and you will have an idea of how though was the competition.

Kayo opened the first time under 7 min with 6:58:06. And the fight begun: 6:58:01 for Viz then August cracked the score with 06:51:06, Viv with 06:51:02, Looralie fighting her way up to finally got the best score. Congratulations!

The RC-44 has been the most popular boat with 56 runs. Quietcrane took the lead with 06:48:6 after a very tough fight with August.

But this hotlap wasn’t only about score, it was about friendship and the opportunity to see a lot of friends. You are an amazing family and amazing friends.

RC 44

La voile c’est une histoire de sensations. C’est l’homme chevauchant un engin ridiculement fragile, poussé par la force du vent et surfant sur les vagues. La voile, c’est sentir son bateau gîter, se ramasser les embruns, prendre conscience de la puissance des éléments qui vous propulsent. La voile c’est un concert de son, un crescendo rythmé par le vent, par le bruit des voiles qui fascées furieusement, qui font entendre leur indignation de ne pouvoir libérer leurs fureurs.

Un bateau de course, c’est le mustang des voiliers, ces sensations sont décuplées, la bête en générale survoilée, ne demande qu’à vous éjecter, à vous renvoyer d’où vous venez ; sur terre et ceci généralement a la nage.

Il faut avoir senti les trépidations de ces machines de guerres, enfants bâtards de technologie « high-tech » et de traditions millénaires, pour imaginer ce que l’on ressent en chevauchant ces monstres.

S’attaquer aux bateaux de compétition sur SL doit être un des challenges les plus difficiles. Comment transmettre au barreur ne fusse qu’une parcelle de ce que vous pourriez ressentir ? C’est à mon avis ce qui fait la différence entre un bon bateau et un « prim » suivant un vecteur envoyé à un algorithme niché dans les textures de ce que vous voudriez être votre bateau.

J’ai décidé de tester le RC44 pour vous. Le RC44 c’est l’essence de la course, un bateau de 44 pieds spécialement conçu pour la régate par Russell Coutts et Andrej Justin. Le bateau est principalement constitué de carbone. Avec ses 70 m2 de grande voile, 160 m2 de gennaker, son lest de 2200 kilos n’est pas de trop pour le maintenir. Sur SL, il est produit par les chantiers Wildwind bien connu des propriétaires du légendaire OP60. La version SL est assez réaliste en ce qui concerne le « look ». Le créateur a pris un grand soin à reproduire son équivalent réel. Je me surprends à imaginer cette silhouette agressive et taillée pour la vitesse fendre les vagues virtuelles.

Assez discutez, il est temps de tester le monstre. Comme terrain de jeu je choisis notre « hotlap » de la semaine. Quoi de mieux pour tester un pur-sang qu’une piste de course ?

Les hotlap sont un concept intéressant sur lequel je reviendrais dans un article. Pour l’instant sachez simplement que chaque semaine, il nous est possible de courir contre un chrono et les résultats sont stockés et visibles par tous les participants. Cette semaine, le parcours se situe à SQUIRES GATE AIRPORT, Terric (165, 233, 21) et est des plus classiques avec ces 3 points. Le vent est d’ouest de 21 nœuds, de quoi a priori provoquer la bête.

Le RC44 vient avec deux HUD. Le premier, à default d’être joli est efficace. Toutes les actions possibles du bateau sont disponibles depuis cette interface. Le « Hud » de navigation est lui illisible et trop compliqué, je me suis donc rabattue sur le « Hud » flottant que vous pouvez activer à volonté. Il est assez classique dans les informations affichées. AWA, vitesse, cap etc. Rien de bien surprenant de cette coté. Aucune couleur par contre pour vous aider a ajusté vos voiles.

J’ai acheté le RC44 il y a deux jours, ne vous attendez donc pas à de hautes performances, c’est avec humilité sur mes capacités que j’embarque. Je suis seule, mais le RC44 peut accueillir des passagers qui seront affectés à différentes positions du bateau. Ceci étant dit, aucun besoin d’équipiers pour naviguer, les deux voiles se règlent ensemble, ce qui classifie de ce bateau dans la famille des monoplaces dans les régates SL.

Je m’éloigne de la ligne de départ pour prendre de l’élan et effectue mon premier virement de bord. Le bateau ne vire pas, il tourne, il pivote. Avec 21 nœuds de vent, un virement sur un monocoque de ce type cela devrait être un festival de sons et de mouvements. Rien. Aucun bruit. Le bateau réagit à la flèche et prend le cap indiqué avec une docilité irréaliste. Premier mauvais point pour le RC. Je sais que les scripts et animations génèrent du « lag » mais doit-on tout sacrifier pour bouger un « prim » ?

Je franchis la ligne à plus de 18 nœuds au largue. Le bateau est stable. Je me déplace (deux positions par bord) et le RC réagit au poids de ma personne en modifiant son assiette. Les positions de rappel sont sobres, loin d’être spectaculaires. Le bruit de la navigation se réduit à un « glouglou » discret.

Après ce premier bord de largue, j’entame mon premier morceau de près. Je me cale à 30 degrés et joue avec les réglages des voiles. Un peu plus de 12 nœuds semble la limite. Le bateau ne donne toujours aucune sensation particulière outre la gîte. Une fois réglé, le cap est constant et le bateau n’a aucune réaction propre. Il continue gentiment sur le vecteur que vous lui avez tracé.

Je pense que de ce côté, j’ai fait le tour de la question. Les scripts de navigation gèrent l’assiette du bateau et le poids du skipper, ne vous attendez à rien d’autre. Vous chevauchez des « prims » qui bougent sur une mer de « prims » dans un univers de « prims ». C’est tout ce que vous ressentirez à bord du RC. Le créateur n’a visiblement pas essayé de briser cette réalité en affinant le comportant de l’embarcation.

Un peu déçue, je continue mon lap, passant au grand largue et déployant le gennaker. On sent (en regardant la vitesse) que le bateau n’est pas un grand fanatique des allures portantes ce qui semble assez logique pour un quillard de ce type. Je patauge un peu, essayant différentes allures de portants, mais le bateau réagit assez mollement. Je continue mon parcours sans grande conviction, mes changements d’allures n’étant visible que sur le HUD…

Je tourne à plusieurs reprises sur le lap. Mon temps s’améliore, le bateau n’est pas désagréable mais manque tout simplement de personnalité. Je reste loin derrière certains skippers comment August, ce qui prouve que je suis loin d’utiliser le RC44 a pleine capacité.

Ce n’est toutefois pas mon type de bateau. Mais attention, cela n’en fait pas un mauvais produit, tout dépend de ce que vous recherchez dans SL. De mon côté, je suis toujours attirée par le réalisme de la simulation. Il n’est en rien réaliste. Pour un bateau de ce type, même sur SL, je me serais attendue à entendre le fracas des voiles et voir l’eau s’écraser sur l’étrave (comme c’est le cas pour d’autres bateaux). Le 44 est orienté vers l’économie en termes de lag, ce qui conviendra sûrement à certaines régates et à quelques marins plus avides de performance virtuelle que de sensations.

Je termine mes essais en regrettant les 1500 L investis. Le RC44 restera au fond de mon inventaire en attendant peut-être un jour des versions plus réalistes.

Le Loup de Mer

Une des richesses de SL, c’est de pouvoir rencontrer des gens venus de tous les horizons, apportant à notre vie virtuelle des expériences diverses.

Il y a quelques mois, au cours d’une régate, je rencontrais Phil. « Look de Newbie », démarche de Charlot (pas d’AO) et avatar directement sortie de la zone d’accueil. De quoi faire peur à la veille baroudeuse virtuelle que je suis. N’écoutant que mon courage, j’embarquais Phil sur mon Nacra et dans la grande aventure de la voile sur SL.

Au fil des mois, comme avec beaucoup d’autres je me suis liée d’amitié découvrant comme souvent une personne formidable derrière l’amas de pixels.

Je tenais à interviewer Phil pour vous.

Avant de nous lancer dans le sujet, permets-moi d’envahir ta vie privée. Tu as pas mal d’expérience de la voile RL. Peux-tu nous en dire plus ?

J’ai découvert la voile à l’âge de 12 ans quand un copain d’école m’a invité sur le bateau de ses parents, un Alpa 9.50. Après être sorti de la marina au moteur, les voiles ont été hissées, le moteur a été coupé … Ce fut un vrai électrochoc que de découvrir le plaisir d’être sur voilier qui glisse sur l’eau avec pour seuls bruits, le sifflement du vent, les gémissements du gréement et l’écoulement de l’eau le long de la coque.

À mon retour, la décision était prise : Quand je serai grand, je ferai le tour du monde sur un voilier.

Après cette expérience, je me suis inscrit dans une école de voile sur dériveurs et faisait des régates hebdomadaires sur la Marne entre les péniches.

A 15 ans, j’ai embarqué comme équipier sur un monocoque de 9 mètres, un Super Arlequin. Nous faisions des régates tout l’hiver et j’y ai appris toutes les manœuvres et la tactique de course.

A 23 ans, j’ai embarqué sur un monocoque de course en aluminium pour une course entre la Guadeloupe et les Açores. Ma première traversée de l’Atlantique, nous étions trois, pas de pilote automatique et j’avais en plus le rôle de navigateur. À l’époque les GPS n’existaient pas encore et on se localisait uniquement avec un bon vieux sextantJ.

Quelques années après je me suis marié. Pour notre voyage de noce, nous avions loué un voilier en Grèce pour 4 semaines … Ma première expérience de Skipper.

A 28 ans, je me suis acheté un dériveur Alu de 11m, un Trisbal 36, et nous sommes partis ma femme, mon fils de 2 ans et moi pour un voyage de 1 An. Partis de méditerranée, nous avons traversé l’Atlantique, parcouru les Caraïbes, Trainé au Venezuela, profité des Bahamas, rejoins la Floride pour finalement revenir à la Rochelle après 32 jours de traversée retour.

À mon retour, je savais que mon prochain bateau serait un multicoque, car plus habitable, plus stable, plus rapide mais il fallait qu’il remonte aussi très bien au vent.

Au salon de La Rochelle, j’ai vendu mon premier bateau. Trente minutes après j’étais sur le stand Catana, neuf mois après je naviguais sur mon nouveau bateau un Catana 40 S.

Après avoir fini de le payer, et avec deux enfants supplémentaires, nous sommes repartis une année. Méditerranée, Madère, Canaries, Cap vert, Brésil, Amazonie et retour aux Antilles où le bateau a été revendu. Que de souvenirs que l’on peut retrouver ici.

Depuis, je navigue sur les bateaux de mes amis …

De quoi faire rêver. As-tu d’autres voyages de la sorte en tête pour le futur ?

Oui, après une pose de 10 ans, le démon de la mer s’est de nouveau installé dans mes rêves. Il me faut attendre que ma dernière fille soit autonome, et je vais me reprendre un catamaran. Un Wharram Tiki 38 ou 46 , ou bien in Islander 39. Des bateaux simples et pas cher, pour partir loin et longtemps … Mais j’ai encore le temps de rêver …

Pour revenir à SL. Est-ce que la voile dans SL joue un rôle par rapport au RL. Est-ce une sorte Méthadone pour marin en manque de navigation ?

Totalement : Regarder son bateau au mouillage, le régler parfaitement, sentir ses mouvements, découvrir de nouveaux lieux, de nouveaux amis qui partagent la même passion, inviter ses amis dessus, boire un coup et refaire le monde jusqu’au petit matin, tout un tas de choses qui font que l’on aime la voie en RL et en SL.

Avec ta longue expérience de la voile RL, que penses-tu de la voile sur SL ? Y-a-t-il des points communs ?

Oui les sensations telles que décrites ci-dessus, mais sans les ennuis. La météo est toujours clémente, le bateau ne dérape pas au mouillage, on dort tranquille, pas de soucis d’électricité, pas de casse, pour rejoindre un coin sympa, on peut se téléporter sans être obligé de se taper 3 jours au près face aux vagues et au courant. La liste est longue, mais le plaisir c’est aussi d’en avoir bavé pour pouvoir profiter du moment.

L’autre soir en discutant, tu me parlais d’un tutorial pour construire des bateaux. Peux-tu m’en dire plus ?

Oui, lorsque je cherchais quel bateau je pourrais prendre pour naviguer sur SL, j’ai longuement cherché un catamaran de croisière. Ne trouvant rien qui me convienne, je me suis dit, pourquoi ne pas le construire ?

En fouillant, je suis tombé sur l’excellent Tutoriel proposé par Tradewinds : https://sites.google.com/site/tradewindsyc/boat-building . Je me suis attaqué aux premiers chapitres et  progresse quotidiennement avec.

La seule lecture du tutoriel ne suffit pas. Lorsque j’ai besoin de plus amples renseignements, je m’adresse à la communauté  de navigateurs constructeurs. En l’occurrence Lucy et Burt qui me guident pour m’en sortir.

En terme de construction qu’elle est ton projet final ?

Construire le bateau de mes rêves en RL. En l’occurrence un catamaran de croisière proche de la philosophie des Wharram. Et y ajouter des scripts qui les rapprochent encore plus du monde RL qu’ils ne le sont déjà.

Ou en es-tu aujourd’hui dans tes tests et réalisations ?

Chapitre 4 du Tutoriel, autrement dit Construire un bateau de façon sommaire et y ajouter des scripts de navigation existant qui fonctionnent déjà.

J’ai fait une petite pause dans le suivi des chapitres et j’ai commencé à bâtir un catamaran, j’y ai ajouté les scripts de Burt et avec son aide et celle de Lucy, modifié quelques paramètres afin d’ajuster le comportement du bateau à celui d’un catamaran, repositionner la caméra, le barreur, modifier la transparence des voiles etc…

Non, car je suis loin de me douter de l’océan qu’il me reste à traverser pour acquérir les compétences nécessaires. De plus n’étant jamais totalement satisfait de mon travail, je pense l’améliorer au fur et à mesure.

J’espère que d’ici la fin de l’année, j’aurai une première version qui commencera à fonctionner.
